Dear Red,

Norman sent me his new spring poem. I called him and read my haiku reply three times. I had to omit the word like at the beginning of the second line, I said, because of the seven-syllable limit. He said he likes the verb action and suggested that I gather a collection of my poems into a book. He’ll write an introduction.

The cherry tree pops

a merry-go-round pink bob,

and waves: toodle-loo!

Norman reads poems like tea leaves. He said the words pops and bob on the first level conjure images of popsicles and a hairdo, but what you really mean, Marilyn, is action. The verbs: pops, as in blossoms bursting open; bob, as a dodging, bouncing movement. The pink tree in full bloom sways back and forth in the breeze. Waves, another verb, is also the custom of moving one’s hand rather than using words to say good-bye as the blossoms blow away. So it is the cycle of life with a positive spin. He said I should call it Cherry Pops. A poem is a treat. He wants me to title them. He says this poem is very Marilyn. Sexually sophisticated and childlike at the same time. “You know not what you do,” he said, “but you do it well.”

Here is another poem I’m working on. I’d like to make it longer because I believe a good kiss can last a lifetime, but I haven’t gotten to that line yet.

Small talk rubs

me wrong lips

speak much longer

Just kiss
